The lord of Yamagata castle Mogami Yoshiaki was deeply saddened when Komahime, his daughter and concubine-to-be of Toyotomi Hidetsugu, was executed at only 15 years old after Hidetsugu was accused of plotting against his father Hideyoshi. Mogami Yoshiaki relocated a temple in Takagai to the Niodo street (now Hatago-machi) in Yamagata City to commemorate Komahime.
Then it was moved to the present location in 1598.
This temple is the largest in Yamagata City and its bell and bell tower are designated as cultural properties of Yamagata Prefecture.
The statues of the wrestlers in the four corners of the main hall are said to have been made by Hidari Jingoro.
The large ginkgo tree that stands on the right side after entering the mountain gate is called “Yukifuri Ginkgo” and is designated as a natural monument of Yamagata City.
