Located at the eastern foot of Mt. Chitose, it is the oldest famous temple in Yamagata. Butsuden is the only earthen floor style in Tohoku.

The temple gate is the Otemon Gate of Yamagata Castle, which was built by Shiba Kaneyori about 600 years ago and was donated by Mogami Yoshimitsu. In the precincts, there is a monument with a poem written by Ujo Noguchi, as well as “Akoya no Matsu,” which was composed as a poetry pillow at the imperial court during the Heian period.
