◆ Spring in Yamagata

Emerging after a long winter as the snow begins to melt, fukinoto (butterbur) comes out from the soil.

In the spring, flowers begin to bloom, and in the vast rice fields, you can see scenes of prepping the land (drying the soil and mixing fertilizer).

After that, the rice fields are filled with water, and once the rice planting begins, the season of fresh greenery starts.

The season reaches early summer when the cherries, a representative fruit of Yamagata, turn red.

This time we will deliver the scenery from spring to early summer.

◆梅にウグイスならぬ、「あんずにメジロ」

● Apricot tree at Kajo Park in April

It is easy to mistake the​ warbling white-eye with the​ Japanese bush warbler but the later bird is of a more fade olive brown​ color.

◆ Fast dash looking for nuts

● One day in April at the Yasoen municipal flower park

In the Yasoen municipal flower park that just opened (it was closed for winter) I met a squirrel running through the promenade with a net dash.

It is a very cute sight.

◆ Photogenic whenever you shoot!

● Yamagata City Folk Kyodokan (former Saiseikan Hospital) and cherry blossoms

This building has served as the center of Yamagata’s medical care as the Prefectural Saiseikan Hospital for many years.

The building in giyofu architectural style, or pseudo-Japanese, also has numerous traditional Japanese carvings and decorations indoors.

● Sunset over the Sea of Japan (Yura)

When we were walking along the seaside, it was already twilight.

This is Yura in spring when the light of the setting sun changes every moment to vivid colors.

● Mt. Gassan seen from the Sagae Dam

Mt. Gassan reflected in the dam lake is a beautiful scene.

Gassan skiing area is famous for summer skiing and can be enjoyed from April to July.

Paddy field like Uyuni Salt Flat

● Scenery at 5:30 on a morning in May

At the time of rice planting, the paddy fields look like the Uyuni Salt Flat.

It is a landscape that can only be seen for a short time during this period.

● Melting of the snow on Mt. Gassan

A waterfall that appears on the way to the Gassan Shizu Onsen.

The thawing water flowing tremendously will gradually disappear come summer time.

● Yamagata's early summer starts with cherries

Sato Nishiki is a representative of cherries, but there are many other varieties that are not so common in other prefectures, such as Benishusho and Gassan Nishiki.

The scenery of cherry trees that grow gently is also a feature of Yamagata in early summer.
