The Safflower Museum is located at the site of the mansion of Shirobei Horigome, who was a rich merchant in the area. The Horigome family has made a fortune by collecting and shipping rice and safflower. There is a samurai warehouse (armory for the farmer soldiers) and a tatami warehouse (used by guests) that tell the story of the time, as well as the Beni-no-kan building where items from the time of the safflower trade are on display.
* Safflower trade: safflower produced in Yamagata was sent to Kyoto and Osaka while in exchange salt, cotton, daily necessities, and Hina dolls were loaded on the return ships.

In addition, you can try yourself at safflower dyeing or taste seasonal local dishes at Hakkei-an.
* Advance reservation is required for safflower dyeing experience
