There are many huge cedar trees in the Mogami gorge here that are thought to be over 1000 years old. The thick ones have a trunk circumference of 15 meters and thin branches and leaves.

The yaku-sugi cedars here are among the most well-known cedar trees of Japan, along with those of Kyoto, Toyama and Akita.
