Hiyoriyama Park has been selected as one of the 100 Best City Parks in Japan and of the 100 Best History Parks in Japan.

From the park, you can overlook the city of Sakata, its port, the Sea of Japan, the Mogami river and the three mounts of Dewa.

It has also been selected as one of the locations for the 100 Best Sunsets in Japan.

It is a famous spot for cherry blossoms where the Sakata Hiyoriyama Cherry Blossom Festival is held in the middle of April every year.
