Speaking of alcohol from Yamagata, I think many people think of its sake.
But Yamagata is also a wine producing region.
It boasts the third largest grape production nationwide, 16 wineries and a high quality of wine that has become a hot topic in recent years.
It is characteristic not only historic wineries, but also for its young and energetic wine makers creating new wines.
Every spring and autumn, wine festivals are held in Yamagata and many wine fans gather from all over the country.
I would like you to visit Yamagata for its delicious food and wine marriage, but please enjoy it at home this year.
There are links to the online shop of the wineries found in Kaminoyama City introduced here so you can try their products if you are interested.
◆ Delicious grapes in the Kaminoyama climate
Kaminoyama City is located at the foot of the Zao Mountain Range in a basin surrounded by mountains on all four sides.
There is little rain during the growing season of the grapes, and the wind blown down from the mountains causes the temperature to drop at night even in the summer, so a difference in temperature between one day can be said to be suitable for grape cultivation.
Did you know that major beverage manufacturers such as Suntory and Sainte Neige Wine (Asahi Breweries) have wines with the name “Kaminoyama” in them?
Kaminoyama also produces grapes for many out-of-prefecture wineries.
You can see that many farmers grow high-quality grapes who are familiar with this climate, and have earned a great deal of trust.
In addition, Kaminoyama City is supporting the people who want to establish new wineries or who want to become grape farmers through their “Wine Town Project.”
It is expected that new wineries full of individuality will be born here in Kaminoyama.
◆ Takeda Winery
Since its opening in 1920, with the motto “Good wine comes from good grapes”, we have been cultivating natural farms on our own farm of 15 hectares.
All the processes from grape cultivation to wine making are carried at the winery, and the reliable technology cultivated over many years is appreciated by many wine lovers.
“Zao Star Wine,” which has been popular for many years, changed its name to “TAKEDA WINERY” in November 2017 and started running anew.
As one of the leading wineries in Yamagata, we have great hopes for its future.

● Takeda Winery Series
The well-balanced taste is well-received and it is recommended for daily meals.
The wine is reasonably priced and you should try it in various situations.
There is a diverse lineup of natural wines called “Sans Soufre” that do not contain antioxidants and wines in which you can enjoy the rich aroma of barrel aging.
● Domaine Takeda Series
You should definitely try the Domaine Takeda Series on a special occasion.
High quality wines such as “Cube Yoshiko” was also served at the 2008 G8 Toyako Summit.
Aged taste is a gem that fascinates the hearts of wine lovers.

◆ Woody Farm & Winery
As the name implies, Woody Farm & Winery has two faces: an orchard and a winery.
We cultivate pears, cherries, blueberries, and sell processed products such as jams and dried fruits.
The cultivation of wine-only grapes has been carried out since the 1950s, and wine making itself since autumn 2013.
It is one of the wineries from which more and more will be expected in the future after winning the gold medal in the “European white grape category” at the 2019 Japan Wine Competition.

● Wines
In addition to red and white wines using grapes cultivated in the company’s own fields, orange wine using the now popular Petit Manseng, and sparkling wine “Poiré” using pears attract many wine lovers.
● Dried fruits
Dried fruits with a soft texture.
The sweetness and sourness of fruits and cheese, which have condensed umami, should enhance the wine even more.

◆ Bell Wood Vineyard
Owner who has been engaged in brewing and cultivation at a winery in Yamagata prefecture for 19 years.
Although it became independent in 2017 and has been selling brewed wine so far, it will start brewing at its own winery in autumn 2020.
The wine was well received at this year’s (February 2020) World Traveling Wine Exhibition held at the Isetan Shinjuku store.
It is a winery that I am very excited about the kind of wine they will produce in the future.

Since it is bottled without filtration, you can enjoy the various flavors derived from grapes.
