Culture History
The Zaosan Shrine is located on the Kumanodake summit (1,841m) at the top of Zao, a mountain of faith.
Formerly known as Kumano Shrine, it was selected as one of Japan’s 100 Touristic Destination in 1950 before changing its name to the Zaosan Shrine in 1952.
In July 2010, the torii gate at the summit collapsed due to a lightning strike.
