Sasaya Kaido has prospered as a public road since ancient times and as a transportation route for daily commodities because it is the shortest distance connecting the country of “Michinoku” and the country of “Idea”.

Traffic declined when the Tokugawa shogunate established the Ushu Kaido road for official travels.

At the old roadside of the pass, the Rokujizo statue was erected as a memorial service for the workers who lost their lives.
