The checkpoint and buildings have been carefully restored based on ancient documents and other historical records.
Kiyokawa was once an important stop on the Mogami River, a major transportation artery leading to the Shonai area. The Kiyokawa Checkpoint was a place that welcomed and saw off travelers.
