Kubozakura in Isawa (Nagai)

  • img

It is one of the oldest Edo higan trees in Japan and said to be about 1200 years old.

This spot is known for the legend of tragic love affair between Sakanoue no Tamuramaro and Otama, the daughter of a local lord.

It is a huge tree with a height of 13 meters. It was also called Yotan-zakura a name coming from the length of the branches spread during the Edo period.

The roots have rotted and the tree’s vigor has declined so measures are planned to regenerate it.
