Jion-ji Terrace

Jion-ji Terrace, which opened on May 1, 2021, is a comprehensive information facility that introduces the charm of the Jion-ji temple and its grounds which became a National Historic Site in 2014.

In the main exhibition hall the Jion-ji Space-Time Travel is a projection mapping on a huge diorama of about four meters by four meters. The history of the temple over the past 1300 years and the training that was once actively practiced there are also introduced.

In addition, cold niku-soba, Sagae coffee, seasonal fruits of Sagae, and cherry smoothies using cherries from Sagae are sold at the Tera Soba & Tera Café that opened in the facility.

The recommended course is to explore Jionji Temple, which is the main temple, after first visiting the Jion-ji Temple Terrace.

Facility information
1. Entrance Hall
Visitors will be greeted by the “Jionji Ichiyama Ezu,” which is a large-format graphic that reflects Jionji Temple during its prosperous era on a wall of approximately three meters by three meters.
In addition, you can check the recommended walking course in the old precincts of the historic temple, the latest highlights, safety information and others in the “Jionji Temple Walking Guidance” displayed on the 65-inch large screen monitor.

2. Permanent exhibition room
In the main exhibition hall the Jionji Space-Time Travel is a projection mapping on a huge diorama of about four meters by four meters. The history of the temple over the past 1300 years and the training that was once actively practiced there are also introduced.

3. Jionji Theater
This is a large 4K round theater with a height of three meters and a width of about 20 meters.
It introduces valuable cultural assets for which Jionji Temple is known, such as the Twelve Heavenly Generals, with powerful images that make full use of the latest modern technology.
You can experience through this special video experience the history and charm of the temple that has been passed down from ancient times.

4. Special Exhibition Room
The first special exhibition is on the Mogami-in, one of the three temples of Jionji.
In the Middle Ages, the lord Sagae Oe invited a priest to increase his power, and in the early modern period he had dozens of servants.
Mogami-in played a central role in Jionji’s history for many years, and this is introduced here through Buddhist statues that have been carefully protected.

5. Temple Soba & Temple Café
You can taste the local specialty of chilled niku-soba in this area.
In addition, the Temple Café sells Sagae coffee prepared under the supervision of certified masters and baristas, seasonal fruits of Sagae, and cherry smoothies using cherries produced in Sagae.

6. Observation rest area
Niohzaka is a slope that many people have climbed for worship since ancient times.
There is an observation rest area at the end of it so you can heal your tiredness and enjoy the spectacular view of the countryside.
